Edwin Lutyens design of New Delhi isolated Shahjahanabad and turned it into a virtual ghetto. But recent infrastructure projects have begun a process of healing. First, the Metro has transformed the access to and from Shahjahanabad both physically and psychologically. Second, the proposed redevelopment of the New Delhi Railway Station, construction of the MCD building and the proposed East West corridor are reconfiguring the geography of the area between the Old and New City . It is proposed to leverage these initiatives through urban design initiatives to link Old and New Delhi , so that the two parts of the city could be better integrated and thereby correct Lutyens “mistake”.
