Shamnath Marg

Shamnath Marg is possibly the most imageable spine of North Delhi- conceptually, the 'Rajpath' of the area. It is one of the widest avenues in the zone and typically characterized by low density development on either side. Mostly buildings with large building bulk or volume set in the midst of huge green spaces.

The Vidhan Sabha (the Old Secretariat), the Oberoi Maidens hotel, the Old Stock Exchange building, the Indraprastha College etc. are among the most significant and impressive heritage structures on the stretch. Qudsia Bagh Gardens, though rather obscure in terms of its relationship with the road at the moment, marks the entry to Shamnath Marg.

There are a number of Govt. Schools (e.g Sarvodaya Vidyalaya) occupying huge plots as well. Certain stretches are also abutted by large private residences or apartment buildings and building complexes. A number of secondary (Raj Niwas Marg, Club Hill Road, Rajpur Road) and tertiary roads (mostly smaller residential streets) branch out from or meet Shamnath Marg at critical points.

Recently this stretch has been covered by the underground metro line. Over a period of time facades of important heritage buildings like the Exchange Stores have deteriorated or altered. High boundary walls have sprung up on this stretch which appear unaesthetic and deprive the passers by of the unique visual features of the stretch.

Sham Nath Marg is the emerging civic space of North Delhi which connects Kashmere Gate, Assembly and Delhi University. This project would help to improve environment at Kashmere Gate specially the historic parks. Conceptual Plans prepared in the Commission can be carried forward in Coordination with MCD, DMRC and Delhi Government.
